Is it technical death metal? Is it melodic death metal? Is it progressive death metal? Obviously, Proponent for Sentience is quite clearly a brilliant hybrid of all three, and I am not sure that I can recall a death metal album that is this technical while also being this memorable and enjoyable (save for Ulcerate’s albums). Imagine if Origin was actually fun to listen to and had non-sterile production, and you will begin to get a sense of what to expect here. While Apoptosis is a step down from this album, I have every confidence that Allegaeon’s future is very bright, but no matter what else is to come, this remains a landmark in the technical / melodic death metal landscape.
